66th Independence Day of India

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new...India discovers herself again." - Jawaharlal Nehru

After more than two hundred years of British rule, India finally won back its freedom on 15th August, 1947. All the patriotic hearts rejoiced at seeing India becoming a sovereign nation and the triumph of hundreds and thousands of martyred souls. It was a birth of a new nation and a new beginning. The only fact that marred the happiness of the fruits by the blood of martyrs was the fact that the country was divided into India and Pakistan and the violent communal riots took away a number of lives. It was on the eve of 15th of August, 1947 that India tricolor flag was unfurled by Jawaharlal Nehru.

Independence Day is acknowledged as a national holiday in India. This year, India will celebrate its 66th Independence Day.

Independence Day Celebrations

The preparations begin a month before Independence Day and the roads are given a larger-than-life appearance with ribbons and Indian flags. There are no parades or extravagant processions on Independence Day, but all over India, most institutions, both academic and governmental, hold a low-profile celebration in which the hoisting of the national flag is the key element.

However, the chief event is conducted in the capital city of India, New Delhi, at the Red Fort, where a large public gathering, mainly of dignitaries, is held. The Prime Minister hoists the tricolour at the cordons of the Red Fort, which receives a salutation of 21 guns. This is followed by the Prime Minister addressing the nation with his speech. The speech holds immense value as it marks a tribute to all those who sacrificed their lives during India’s freedom struggle. It also highlights the accomplishments of the nation during the past year beside discussing major issues and suggesting steps for further growth.

On the eve of Independence Day, Delhi skyline gets dotted with numerous multicolored kites as people indulge in kite flying competitions cheering out loud, elevating the spirit of the day!

Whatever our field, whichever the profession, larger issues like matters like civic sense and national pride remain the same. As the tri-colour unfurls in its full splendor on the 15th day of this August, let’s introspect on to how we can together make a positive difference for the nation - whether through eco-friendly practices, energy-efficient measures, community service participation, financial contribution, fighting corruption or cost-effective innovation.

Happy Independence Day To All
